In Westeros there are Seven Kingdoms. StormsEnd ruled by often drunk King Robert Baratheon who hates the Targaryens because of his lost love Lyanna. Stannis is his long suffering Hand. The Reach is ruled by House Gardiner with the Tullys as their stewards. Brandon Stark rules the North with Barbrey Rhyswell as his queen. This is supreme world building.
