🏰 Step Back in Time: The Ultimate Lincoln Castle Tour
Welcome to an extraordinary journey through time! In today's video, we are stepping behind the massive stone walls of Lincoln Castle to explore nearly a thousand years of intrigue, justice, and survival. Whether you are a history buff or just looking for your next weekend adventure, Lincoln Castle offers a unique glimpse into the events that shaped the world we live in today. From the moment you walk through the East Gate, you’ll feel the weight of the past at Lincoln Castle, a fortress that has stood as a symbol of power since the days of William the Conqueror.
The story of this site begins in 1068. Built on the site of an even older Roman fortress, the castle was a statement of Norman dominance. This site is home to one of only four surviving originals of the 1215 Magna Carta. Standing in the presence of a document that laid the foundations for modern democracy is a spine-tingling experience you won't find anywhere else.
But the history doesn't stop in the medieval era. The castle grounds also house a chilling Victorian-era "Separate System" prison. Here, prisoners were kept in total silence and forced to wear masks to prevent them from communicating, believing that isolation would lead to reform. Walking through the Victorian chapel, with its individual "stalls" for prisoners, provides a haunting contrast to the opulence of the royal history found elsewhere on the grounds.
If the history doesn't hook you, the views certainly will.
The Medieval Wall Walk: Scale the heights and walk the full circumference of the curtain wall. You’ll get a 360-degree bird's-eye view of the stunning Lincoln Cathedral and the rolling hills of the Lincolnshire Wolds.
The Magna Carta Vault: See the Charter alongside the 1217 Charter of the Forest. It’s a rare opportunity to see the documents that limited the power of kings.
The Victorian Prison: It is one of the best-preserved examples of its kind. Exploring the cells gives you a visceral, albeit spooky, look at 19th-century justice.
