Disneyland, summer school, weekend outings—
Are you providing your children with "sufficient experiences"?
The term "experience gap," which was selected as one of Sanseido's "New Words of the Year 2025," is a topic of discussion.
One survey found that approximately one in four elementary school students from families with an annual income of less than 3 million yen had not participated in sports, nature experiences, or travel even once in the past year.
This is about one-third of the number from families with an annual income of 6 million yen or more.
Furthermore, the spread of this term is creating anxiety about "having to enroll children in lessons and travel," making parenting feel stifling.
This episode will dispel misconceptions about the experience gap spreading on social media, explore what experiences truly mean, and understand why this gap is emerging.
Beyond just family economic resources, factors such as time constraints due to dual-income households, a decline in experiences provided by communities and schools, and differences in the experiences parents themselves have received contribute to inequality. The structures creating this inequality are not singular.
We will thoroughly discuss the disparity in experiences, which also impacts university entrance exams.
