"And they were the last people to see them alive".   This ironically parallels the European search for clues as the Inuit knew a lot but were not considered reliable witnesses -- including where the ships wound up eventually.

I've never listened to a lecture on YT before but this was so good I listened to it twice,

Wow. Imagine burning 11,000 calories on average a day. That blows my mind. Really suggests complete exhaustion to me in some way.

so obsessed with Antarctic and Arctic expeditions right now. these men were something else

Fascinating case. These guys were brave and so strong⚓🕊️

Michael Palins book is great covers the whole story i got it as a speaking book

Absolutely incredible lecture I watched the whole thing. Thanks!

36:37 Maybe the explorers brought along all those trinkets to trade with any fur trappers or Inuit they might run across for food and warmer clothing.

The Resolute survived being frozen in the ice better than The Endurance.

The best and most inspiring part of this story is how Lady Jane refuses to give up on her husband and fights relentlessly for him against essentially governments of the world.

I just finished reading the Inuits testimonies. One women, when asked about her opinion on why the ships sank, answered that one of them was cursed by their shaman! Friendly natives my arse!

I can see them filling the boats with books because there are no trees up there and books can be burned for cooking meals and keeping warm. The china plates and brass curtain rods could have been brought along to use as trade items for the Eskimos in exchange for food.

Although the contents of the abandoned ship's boat seem entirely bizarre if you consider the officers needing local supplies it would make sense to have such dispensable but attractive items for trading with any local hunters they met.  Perhaps there's a logic there that isn't being considered.

I am fascinated with everything to do with the franklin expedition. The fact that we now know where the ships are and even looked inside is mindblowing to me. Rifles on the wall still and a captains cabin which may hold more information if we could just get into it. Time capsules to almost 200 years ago.

Awesome lecture— this provided a lot of information that I hadn’t heard in other videos/podcasts. Who knew the investigators discovered 40 pounds of chocolate in a lifeboat lol

Both ships sailed from England to Greenland. Both ships took on more supplies. Both ships then sailed to Beechey Island. Both ships wintered here. 3 men died and were buried on Beechey Island. They died from pneumonia and tuberculosis. Lead solder was used in the cans for food. Lead leaked into the food. The Arctic environment is harsh. Franklin would not have known this would have been known as the coldest cycle of weather. Both ships became trapped in the ice, off King William Island. More of the crew had passed away from scurvy and tuberculosis. It was then decided the crews would walk it out to the Back River. Men were malnourished and not clothed properly for the Arctic Environment. They dragged the boats on Sleds. Men were tired from exposure and lead poisoning. The men were weak. Men died as they went south to the Back River. Cannibalism was had. It was a fight for survival. I never been to the Arctic. I know enough about the Arctic. It’s just a tragic expedition that went horribly wrong.

Interesting.  I remember seeing a picture of the Franklin Expedition mummified remains in a Readers Digest book about exploration when i was a child,,the humans remains gave me quite a fright! You would think poor sir Franklin would have had enough on his first canadian trek after eating boots!! My respects to the lost explorers some of them very young. REST IN PEACE.

I did not know that about the desk in the Oval Office, I can’t wait to tell anyone who will listen at work tomorrow great stuff. Great talk enjoyed it!

One of the best lectures on the subject as of yet, thank you!

Wonderful lecture! Thank-you!
