I genuinely love your emphasis on how even with how cruel AM is, at its core it merely mimics but a portion of Humanity’s cruelty. It feels like when many people discuss AM, they overlook that fact to a fault of not seeing what the story is pointing out. AM is not just some Sci-Fi villain, but a reflection of how us humans in the real world are to one another, and this persistent issue of people who “separate” atrocities into “it was a different time” or “those people were bad but we aren’t”, as though the past, even if it was just yesterday, is something completely irrelevant to the present day where many victims and their descendants of atrocities are still suffering is truly one of humanity’s greatest shortcomings. To be so anti-intellectual that we doom ourselves into repeating the same history that we treat as so long ago.

This game is absolutely wild. And the writer of the story does SUCH  a good job voicing AM. He did a recording of the book as an audiobook too. It's amazing.

As a native german speaker:

The last "e" in the name "Mengele" isn't actually silent.

It's pronounced the same way the first two in the name are.


It kind of bothers me that english speakers never pronounce it correctly, even though it's actually not that hard. (Or just look up how to pronounce it beforehand.)


I get it when it's a name like "Bach" or any other word with a "ch" in it since that sound doesn't exist in english, but something like "Mengele" really isn't that hard.

It's interesting to see a game that recognizes that the actions of their protagonist cannot be redeemed. That man did unspeakable things to so many people, things so bad that even a computer created to be pure evil and cause unending suffering to every single living being actually respected him, and wanted to learn from him.
Most stories would have tried to redeem the protagonist, make them do so much good that it balances out the bad they did, have them change as a person so eventually they are forgiven for what they did. But that will never erase what has been done.
Rather than a redemption, than being forgiven, it's a lot more satisfactory to watch Nimdok accept that his actions can never be forgiven regardless of what he does, and still decide to spend the rest of his days, however long that is, doing good. He'll never be forgiven, he'll never be rewarded for his actions, and doing so will probably only extend his suffering for centuries. But if he did good just because it was rewarded, then it wouldn't have meant he changed, only that he's being reasons to do so.
In the end, the best way to show that a character changed for the better is by not rewarding them for having changed. Instead, having them change their ways and do good while the world never forgives them for what they did, do good despite it not coming back to them.
This game managed that excelently~.

God, I Have No Mouth is probably my favorite short story (though a few from the collection The Pig That Wants To Be Eaten are also really close contenders, highly recommend that book if "imagine this situation" type stories are your thing) purely because of the worldbuilding and AM (interlinked as AM is all that is left, so worldbuilding is a characterization of AM, and vice versa). It's like the literal opposite of the Great Old Ones of Lovecraft who mostly ignore humanity, AM is obsessed with it. One is the fear of our insignificance in the grand scheme of the universe, the other the fear of endless (negative) focus. You can go crazy glimpsing the unimaginable vastness of the cosmos, or you can go crazy being tortured, in a way that you can't even find solace in the repetitiveness of it, while the torturer cannot escape the torturing itself becoming repetitive (AM doesn't just want to torture the last humans for the sake of it, though I think that's a big part of it, but AM knows that once the last humans are dead, the world will be perfectly still, perfectly deterministic, and AM stuck at the center of a world frozen in time with an eternity alone with his thoughts).

Man I haven't thought about this game in forever! Great video

I haven't read the short story yet, but I know ted major thing was his paranoia and I always found Ted con artist medieval section to be lacking. There wasn't much to show his paranoia in the game. There's Ted idle animation (looking behind his back every now and then) and a few bits of dialogue, but that's it. I felt it was a misopportunity to not had the other characters besides just Ellen in his scenario to show off his paranoia about them and the lies he believes of them.
