From infancy, Marie-Josèphe, daughter of the "Sun King" Louis XIV, was raised in a convent, but the strict nuns failed to instill in her either obedience or humility. When the now-elderly king decides he has no one to leave France to and must therefore live forever, a court scholar finds a solution: a mermaid captured from the sea, possessing the source of immortality, is brought to the palace. Meanwhile, Marie-Josèphe, unaware of her relationship to the monarch, is summoned to court, and soon an incredible bond is formed between her and the captive mermaid.
