My 5th Great Grandfather Alexander Mitchell was a miner from Leadhills, who joined the Lanarkshire Militia in 1803, then as a Sergeant joined what became the Royal Scots  in 1807, serving through the Peninsular Wars and then the Napoleonic wars fighting through Portugal and Spain in all the major battles and ending up at Waterloo. Retired from the Army in Dublin "worn out through length of service".... returned to Scotland to Peebles  in 1822 where we was employed as a road mender and grave digger. They made them tough in those days,
