On the occasion of Reinhold Messner's 82nd birthday – a life story of triumph, tragedy, and boundless freedom.

This documentary tells the extraordinary story of Reinhold Messner: from his childhood in South Tyrol, through his first major climbing expeditions, to his spectacular ascents of the world's highest mountains.

In 1970, tragedy on Nanga Parbat changed his life forever. His brother Günther Messner died during the descent. Reinhold himself survived, severely injured and suffering from frostbite.

But Messner did not give up mountaineering. In 1978, he and Peter Habeler achieved the historic ascent of Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen. Just a few months later, he returned to Nanga Parbat alone, becoming the first person to reach the summit of an eight-thousander solo.

In 1980, the next challenge awaited: Reinhold Messner climbed Mount Everest solo via the north face.

In 1986, he finally accomplished something previously unimaginable: he became the first person to climb all 14 eight-thousanders without supplemental oxygen.

But behind these records lies more than just mountaineering. It's about family, loss, ambition, freedom, pushing boundaries, and the unwavering will to constantly reach new horizons.
