Separation of different pigment= granulation.
Same colour in various tints = floculation.
That's where people get caught up and mix the two !

You also can get granulation on a very smooth paper as well.

Love Daniel Smith watercolours, just finished a painting using undersea green they are beautiful to use, also my favourite is Schmicke watercolours used them for the last 25 years. Thanks for sharing

Granulating paints will granulate even on paper that is glossy smooth. The paper texture will affect the ways these paints will granulate. You are correct in saying texture from paper will affect granulation.

The movement and blooming, is diffusion, and is from the oxgal in the paint. Most true granulating pigments don't move or disperse as much, just because the pigment particals are so much bigger and heavier. With paint that's made to granulate, the heavy pigments are paired up with a staining or non granulating pigments, which makes the color separate, the big pigments push the smaller pigments out of the way.

Have you tried Winsor and Newton Manganese blue? I used it many years ago and was stunned by the granulation. It was in a sky wash and the pigment was so heavy it sank into the paper amazingly. Bright blue little dots all through my sky! Lesson learnt lol. However , after many many light glazed layers of cool blues like Cobalt and Pthalo I ended up with a wonderful hazy summery look in my sky. I still love that painting and what I learnt from the experience. I see that Daniel Smith also has Manganese blue...not sure about other companies. I am assuming that the Manganese blue (I still have years later) is still the same pigments.
