An estimated 220,000 people came to Central New York in July 1999 for the four-day Woodstock '99 music festival at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome. The festival was marred by violence, scorching heat, overcrowding, limited access to water and a slew of other issues. By the final night, the event had descended into chaos with rioting and fires. This video features News Source 13's coverage of the event in conjunction with ABC News from July 22-26, 1999.

I remember you could buy this on ppv when cable tv had ppv channels. You could still hear everything just the picture was blurred out. I listened for hours as a kid.

Woodstock ‘99 was a good example of why the Y2K era sucked ass. Everyone thought the world was gonna end so some people used that as an excuse to act like fucking jackasses. You saw that kinda behavior everywhere back then, Woodstock was just one example.

If the crowd was hyped enough for LB, Korn and RATM, imagine what they would have been like with Slipknot

@plisskenationbackfromthede3657 1 year ago

Can you imagine if LB started playing smoke on the water as an encore 😂

People ask when they find out you were there, why did you burn it down? We were hungry, broke, hot AF, pissed off cuz the promoters didn't give a shit about us what so ever. There was a little over 2k portable toilets that were full by end of day 1 and never emptied. Security, what was that. The ONLY security was at the stages. I took $250 for food, drinks, alcohol (day 1 was my 21st bday), souvenirs and drugs. end of day 2 I was BROKE. One of the most fucked up thing people do not talk about is the PROMOTERS stopped us from taking in our own food and drinks, and forced us to buy food and water at astronomical prices. another thing stories don't say is that spray painted all over the place was Profitstock. That's all it was to the promoters. They didn't give a shit about us.

One of the tricks promoters of large festivals , like this, do is set themselves up as shell or holding company and sub-contract everything out, from talent to sound to logistics to concessions. They limit their liability and responsibility by doing this. When there is a problem with something? "Hey, ask them, we gave them the contract for that"

I wonder where are the people who was there. And what are they up to today?

After seeing the mess that was going on no wonder people went nuts
No shade in the blazing heat
Contaminated water
Everything at extremely high prices
Perfect warning sign when you put profit above literally everything else

Not as bad as our 40,000 boy scouts in 2005 during the national scout jamboree. Thousands evacuated due to heat stroke and heat exhaustion. Thanks to the soldiers at AP Hill for helping us out. We did lose 4 people on the first day.

I keep thinking about this and nobody mentions how freaked out the audience got when Alanis Morissette played and did mostly her second album....that really set things off!
