Before we head east for the Gibb River Road, we had to make sure we were actually ready. This one's the full run-through of how we prep for a remote trip: the route planning, the checks on the cruiser and the caravan, the spares and tools we carry, how we provision food, water and fuel for a month, and the safety and comms side that help us prevent small problems turning into big ones.
We took on the Gibb a few years back, green as, and we were probably over-prepared in some areas and badly under-prepared in others. So this is everything we've learned since, and it's the same checklist we run through for any remote trip we do... the Gibb, Cape York, the Gary Junction, all of it. You don't have to be doing this exact trip for it to apply.

1) A set of Adjustable Plier Wrenches instead of the adjustable Cresent wrenches you have [The adjustable plier wrenches help to avoid bolts and nuts having their facet corners rounded off because of ill fitting crescent wrenches.]
2) A Metric and Imperial Thread Repair File. [Good for repairing a thread on a damaged wheel stud.]
3) A roll of Waterproof Self-Fusing Silicone Tape. [Good for emergency repairs of holes in radiator hoses]
4) A tube of Selleys Aqua Knead putty. [Good for repairing holes in water pipes and fuel tanks.]
5) A reciprocating saw instead of the electric chainsaw because a reciprocating saw can serve dual purposes - Firstly to cut firewood and secondly to cut metal if needed during emergency vehicle repairs.
6) A GlueTread sidewall repair kit. [Whilst it is illegal to repair damaged tyre sidewalls, when you are out in the middle of nowwhere you might not have a choice but to do an emergency temporary sidewall repair.]
7) Pre-grease the spare wheel bearings and seal them in vacuum seal bags.
8) A Thru-Tang Hammering screwdriver set instead of the regular screwdrivers you have.
9) A set of metal punches and cold chisels.
10) A pry bar around 17"
11) A set of circlip pliers.
12) Zip ties.
