Its from the perspective of a one who is dying and despite being "a god" they are still beholden to the power that death has over them.
Iron Maiden did their most extensive world tour in '84 / '85 dubbed the 'World slavery tour'... and featured a mummified 'Eddie the head' appearing onstage... They even played Poland for the first time behind the iron curtain (It was a Communist country then) and performed 4 songs live from the 'Powerslave' album and several sold out shows at Long Beach, California were recorded for the 1985 live album 'Live after death'... one of the best live records in heavy metal, and a concert video.
However, the grueling tour took a toll on the band members and especially vocalist Bruce Dickinson... he wanted to experiment on the next Iron Maiden album but his songs were rejected for Maiden's 1986 album 'Somewhere in time'... Guitarist Adrian Smith wrote lyrics for 3 songs for the first time on that record.
