Paracelsus radically transformed the theory and practice of Alchemy. The final book of his Paramirum (lit. "Beyond Miracles") discusses the topic of Invisible and Supernatural Diseases and their treatments. These sections are fascinating for their discussions of the role of Faith, Imagination, the power of Mummia - metaphysical power in corpses - and, of course, his radical discussion of Sorcery as "using the tools of the devil against him." But this word had legs! There close connections to similar rumors in late 19th C British India. I was never able to track down references to mumia in Arab pharmacopeia, though I have been told it shows up in Chinese sources, which borrowed from Islamic medicine. I also managed to find references to colonial-era American poet and physician who had a mummy garden.
This idea of mummia, of a medicine made from human bodies, whether gathered legitimately or illegitimately, travelled around the world.
