Historically, Aceh was a powerful Sultanate during the late 17th century, a golden era that was eventually dismantled by Dutch invasions starting in 1873 and the final dissolution of the Sultanate institution in 1914. Following this upheaval, we witnessed the rise of a progressive strand (akin to Muhammad Abduh’s views), championed by youth ulama who incited a civil revolution against the traditional aristocratic class during the Indonesian independence war (1945–1949)—largely because the aristocrats had been co-opted by the Dutch colonial administration.
As Indonesia emerged as a modern nation-state, the second strand (the fundamentalist/traditionalist fortification) vividly manifested in Aceh. Much like the Deobandi-Maturidi movement in India (alongside Aceh’s own Syafi'iyah-Asy'ari foundation), this strand emerged to preserve what they revered as the pure 17th-century Islamic model of Aceh’s golden era, which they felt subsequent generations had forgotten. True to this strand's characteristics, it resisted integrating madrasas with formal schools and strictly mirrored fatwas born from colonial-era resistance.
