What fantastic footage.

Really miss those slam door trains now.

So glad this b-roll survived - it was like going back in a time machine, I could almost smell the burning dust.

Love seeing this old B-roll! It amazes me so few people acknowledge the camera, like it's normal to be filmed going to work!

Wow, this is nostalgia. The dusty old seats, slam doors, everything about it is from a bygone era. Even the platform announcements bring it all flooding back, great upload.

These are so stuck in my childhood memory 😂

I miss being able to pull down a window and get a nice breeze! Not like the suffocating trains we have today! They sure look dusty but this video brings back fond memories.

I can remember what these trains used to smell like. EPB should have stood for: 'every passenger bounces' 😉

The old slam-doors were the best trains. Magnificent piece of footage, including the sounds - door slams and clanking over track joints.

I remember this place very well - it's New Cross in East London. At that time my Aunt, Uncle and three cousins lived there so we often used those trains when visiting them to go to London Bridge and Charing Cross. My Aunt and Uncle still live there to this day - the rolling stock has changed alot but the building is much the same.

Connex South Central used to operate past end-of-life examples of these carriages between London Bridge and Guildford in the early 2000s. Interesting because this included traditional First Class compartments anyone could ride in as it was not a first class fare route. Even more interesting was the traditional porceline toilet that emptied directly onto the track - hence the notice to only flush while the train was in motion. Lovely for late night track workers as the vomit express thundered past.

Observe how nobody talked to each other. Everybody just starred into their smartphones, eehhhh newspapers.

Funny you should say nearly empty coach when the last train the footage was standing room only, and probably a train of 8 or 10 coaches, obviously footage taken from a train coming out of London in the morning peak. Been on those trains and the faster ones many times, I finished my train commuting days to CX just as the networkers were coming on stream..and even they are on their way out now!!

I started working in the mid 80s so must have spent 1000s hours on these trains. Mixed emotions as they were dirty, smelly and very often late (my Employer wrote to BR about me always being late!). But there was sense of community e.g. people playing card games. The Brighton line had restaurant cars, in the evening it was like a pub with people drinking and smoking standing in the parcel section. Modern trains are in a different league, but soulless.

I do remember the slam door trains.  I think the sliding doors ones came to my part of the world in the early 2000s.  I miss the old 1st class departments in the slam door trains, as they seem like proper 1st class - like you used to see on old films and TV.

I used to take these trains from rural Surrey up to London. Doors you could open when the train was moving, upholstery that smelled of skunk, smoking compartments, guard's van for bikes and you didn't have to remortgage your house to travel. This video is from the final days before privatization changed everything. Try getting your bike on a train and smoking a ciggy these days!

I hope at least a few examples of each old train class, both EMU & DMU, have been preserved for heritage & nostalgia value.

At least  it was an affordable method of travel back then, some of the peak time early morning fares now  days are  unbelievable.

Fantastic footage. Thanks for the memories 👍

I remember slam door trains. But by the early 1990s The slide door ones were quite common.

Thats so cool, memories floodding in.
