VISIT / HAUL OF BUYUT GADING
Village: Gadingan, District: Sliyeg, Regency: Indramayu, Wednesday, October 23, 2019.
#HISTORICAL GLANCE Origins of Gadingan Village
Before the formation of Gadingan Village, this area was called Pecantilan. According to a 16th-century story, there lived a woman named Nyi Suari, a descendant of the Sultanate of Cirebon. Pecantilan existed when Indonesia was still colonized by foreign countries. At that time, Pecantilan was a very sparsely populated place.
Usually, villages were under the control of a larger village. At that time, the most bustling village was Tugu Village, north of Pecantilan Gadingan. This village was headed by a Kuwu, who resided in the center of Alas Kedung Penjalin. This Alas can still be found today, within the Buyut Penjalin site complex in Tugu Village, Sliyeg District.
It is said that during Nyi Suari's time in Pecantilan, she possessed a staff, known in Javanese as a tetekan, made of Pring Gading (yellow bamboo). Nyi Suari planted this yellow bamboo in a place called Kebuyutan (the Center Complex).
This was done to leave a mark indicating that the owner of the yellow bamboo/ivory bamboo was a descendant of the Cirebon Sultanate. After planting the Pring, or yellow bamboo, Nyi Suari returned to the Cirebon Sultanate.
After Nyi Suari's departure, a resident of Percantilan saw the yellow bamboo she had inherited. This person believed that the bamboo planted in the burial site held messages, conveying divine revelations from their ancestors.
In Pecantilan, people often gather in the bale (a place where people gather for discussion). After a long period of discussion, they took the initiative to elect a leader from among themselves.
After being based in Tugu Village for a long time, this Pecantilan underwent changes, with more and more people arriving and settling there as residents. This was based on the principle of mutual benefit, as agreed upon by the Gadingan residents. In 1860, the Pecantilan Head, Bekel Sarwan, changed the name of the area to Gadingan, recognizing the footprints left by Nyi Suari, who left bamboo stakes called "bamboo gading."
However, after Bekel Sarwan's leadership passed away, due to the unrest and aspirations of the residents, Bekel Kadem, as the head of Pecantilan, proposed to the Kuwu Tugu, H. Dulghoni, that Pecantilan separate from Tugu and establish itself as a separate village. Due to the distance, the growing population, and the need for a new village, the village was established through a decree issued by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in Dermayu.
In 1860, a new village was established, separated from Tugu, and the Afdelling Control of Sleman officially inaugurated it.
