A tip I find helpful: if you're into vintage, look for fun tags and lot numbers. Company logos were much more colorful and fun than now.

I have a tip for clothes, especially if your thrift store doesn't have dressing rooms or they're closed: Bring a tape measure with you. If you're searching for tops, for example, measure one that you already own and fits well, so you have an idea of what dimensions are comfortable on your body. Then measure any tops in the store that you're interested in with the tape measure to see how they compare. Hope that helps!

Great tips Scotty! Our thrift stores don't have dressing rooms or offer returns, so I try to remember to wear leggings, and a snug tank top under a long skirt and cardigan to make trying things on in the corner easy and not creepy. I'm old and no one needs to see..

I love going on weekdays in the morning (especially crummy days)! I find the best stuff then. The fabric feeling is a good tip, lately I've been actually paying attention to that more and more. My tip would be getting a reusable bag that can fold and go into your purse. But that's if you're mostly clothes shopping. Great video, great tips! :_yzma:❤:_kronk:

As a broad shouldered feminine person, men's button down shirts saved my so much money when I was a server, especially when they would get stained beyond repair

Went recently to the thrift store close to my home. I took it slow, I had a very bad day the day before (silly cat deciding to be sillier and disappearing for 24 hours...I've lost 10 years of life, I swear!) and I wanted to gift me with something, but not so much could be found...until my hands felt something really pleasant. A nice dress, with a pleasant grey-silver colour...I cheched the tag, 100% silk. And it had been there for quite a while, so it must have been inexpensive by now! The only drawback? It was a size 2...and I'm a quite tall, fairly thick person...I carried it around for a while, then set it back. I hate that I can't find nothing with my size, and I guess it's the same for everyone else...I hope that nice dress found an elegant lady (or a punk rock lady) who can wear it with style or a nice pair of combat boots underneath. I'll go back again to find my gift...and again, and again, until I find what I'm looking for (or I have my home and can afford the gorgeous cherry wood library with the stair and the table with six chairs and the walnut inlay).

My fav op shop each week puts everything with a specific colour tag 🏷️ on sale for $2-au, and everything with another colour at half price.  I make sure I’m first in the door on Monday mornings to grab the best deals.  😊❤

Adjacently relevant thrifting pet peeve: I’ve noticed some thrift stores near me (GOODWILL!) separating sheer dresses/tops from the under-lining camisole/slip that comes with it, so they can be sold separately. I hate that!

Great tips. My favorite thrift store has a different item on sale every day. Friday is books, Saturday is clothes, Thursdays (my favorite) is 25% off on any one item. Also, my Bestie and I have made such good friends of the staff. I'm doing a "no buy January," but we're going this Thursday just to say hi to everyone!

Every thrift store is different. I remember going to a Goodwill in Las Vegas last fall because I was in Vegas for a few months dealing with some business. And what was really bizarre to me is on a weekday afternoon, they announced that "the stocking staff" are done for the day and must all go home. That was it for new stuff hitting the shelves that day. I'd never seen that in California. They just change shifts and continue putting stuff out.

The people in my town must be crazy, I work retail too and whenever the weather is bad the mall gets so busy! I hate rainy Saturdays because it becomes a mad house!

My 2c/PSA:
1. FABRICS - I favor natural fibers too, HOWEVER when thrifting I make exceptions. 1. these items have already been sold. Their thrift purchase does not create incentive for the company who produced it (far as I know). They might just end up in a landfill anyway if not given a second life somehow. Of course don't buy something icky, but if you like it at the thrift store and it's synthetic, give it a chance. Plus, a lot of super fun, funky patterns happen to be synthetics.
2. I'm 5'2", small-ish and some of my favorite items are from the men's because women's clothing is often put into men's if its design does not scream "feminine". Like plain 100% cotton jeans that were obviously for a female shape but had no spandex or embellishment.

Another thing I avoid is Senior discount days. I’m a senior myself but jeezzz it’s crowded. I find Mondays better in my area. I live in a small rural community and we don’t have any of the big stores like goodwill so it’s always a good hunt for finding whats mine.

I’ve been going to my local Salvation Army on their 1/2 off day for textiles. Curtains, sheets & pillow shams are awesome & ornate- bonus most are made of material that can be tossed in the washing machine. I went to the bins yesterday and snagged a cart full of jacquard & brocade curtains, linens & a big leather jacket to use for costuming. Total cost was $15, it’s the only way I can afford to create anymore.

Great advice. I'd add to look at the racks near the changing rooms or full length mirrors. By that I mean not just the specific go back rack but the ones close by. Sometimes people change their mind but not immediately after they leave the changing room. And if there is no changing room, the full length mirror takes its place. Second tip: Carry a measuring tape in your bag or on your person. I'd say to do this at all times because you might decide to go thriving on a whim. Also know your flat measurements so you can measure the item. This will help if there is no sizing label or no place to try the clothes on. The measuring tape also helps for buying furniture. Lastly, if you prioritize natural fibers, shop in the mens section.
