On 17 April 2021, only 30 mourners were allowed inside St George's Chapel to bury Prince Philip. Every seat had been hand-picked by the Queen, and almost every name belonged to the House of Windsor. The exception was Penelope Knatchbull, Countess Mountbatten of Burma, the daughter of a London butcher whose steakhouse chain once sold 700,000 steaks a year, who for nearly 30 years had been the Duke of Edinburgh's closest confidante and his "keeper of secrets." She had married into the family in 1979, just 8 weeks after the IRA bomb at Mullaghmore killed Lord Mountbatten, and in 1991 she buried her own 5-year-old daughter in the grounds of Broadlands. The palace never explained the friendship, and Penny never once spoke of it.
