You're saying the right thing, but people aren't following you.
Behind this may be "fearful management" that tries to control people with numbers. Megumi Matsumoto, who created "balloon accounting" after being disliked by all her employees, and psychiatrist Yasufumi Nagoshi discuss leadership in an era when "righteousness alone can't motivate people." Empathy, not fear; space, not control. We explore management tips based on emotional connection from the perspectives of esoteric Buddhism and Adlerian psychology!

Megumi Matsumoto
Graduated from Kitakyushu National College of Technology and joined Lam Research Corporation, where she worked as an engineer for five years. She then studied abroad in Switzerland and earned an MBA. After returning to Japan, she joined the Mandarin Oriental Tokyo, but left upon marriage. After marrying the second-generation president of Matsumoto Kosan Co., Ltd. (Chichibu District, Saitama Prefecture), a 50-year-old manufacturer of auto parts, she spent three years as a full-time housewife before becoming a director (general affairs and accounting manager).
Amid a mountain of challenges, including poor performance, a labor shortage, personnel issues due to a lack of internal communication, and the black box nature of operations, she found herself in a difficult position when, as a director, she was entrusted with accounting, a role she had no experience in. While studying accounting herself, she sought a way to "generate profits and make both management and employees happy." Based on the belief that "the most important thing in an organization is the hearts of the people," she studied psychology, mnemonics, neuroscience, Buddhism, and other fields, and devised her own unique method, the "Balloon Accounting Method." Using this method, she successfully helped all employees understand the accounting perspective and adopt a managerial mindset. Her sometimes strict, sometimes warm, maternal love brought together the previously fragmented workforce, and she successfully implemented internal digital transformation centered on "purpose," "quantitative strategy," and "accounting thinking." By implementing an in-house app, she successfully reduced fixed costs by ¥40 million and created a workplace where women can thrive through improved working conditions. She is also a key figure in growing the company into one that actively promotes female leadership. She currently conducts workshops on money for employees of major companies and students, based on her book "Fusen Accounting Method" (Gentosha).
