Took me a year to diagnose my driveshaft on my k1500. I did 2 alignments at 2 different shops, tire rebalancing and rotations and the driveshaft balance was something I was unaware of at the time and was a Hail Mary call. Wish I would have seen this years ago!
When I worked for Ford as a mechanic, my main job was as a NVH troubleshooter, yes, a lot of moving parts have different frequencies that you have to chase, great challenge to isolate.
Thanks Kenny! Didn't help me with my problem but a very educational video none the less. I'm 56 and still value learning things that can and will save me money. I'm not a mechanic but I'm still the one doing all the work on our cars thanks to guys like you sharing the knowledge on utube. THANKS!!
Rebuilding the rear end the right way, lost art! Tolerance on the money $ come back to shop$if not done right, the first time! Enjoyed step by step of analysis of problem!
To diagnose by feel and sound is an art my friend. I hope some young people see this and are inspired because we need more mechanics going forward, or we will soon run out of this type of talent. Great job.
I had that same stop driveshaft thud coming to a stop in my uncle's 92 Silverado. I fixed it easy, some one flip the drive shaft connection to the rear end and it was off balance just flip it 180°
I'm 76 years old been around cars since I was a kid never had problems with drive shaft balance only let you know what kind of junk they're building these days as far as the rear end differential picking up when you stop it doesn't pick up it drops down that picks up when you put power to it looks like he's right about the differential but they do have what they call gear Lash that does give you clearance between the ring and pinion this is the cheaper ones that so many manufacturers came up with to get the preload on the bearings they came up with this thing called a crush sleeve nothing but junk that's why all the hot rodders want a 9-inch Ford which is set up completely different with shims and adjustable spinner nuts for the carrier
The Ford two piece driveshaft is notorious for having the slip bump issue. There’s no real way to fix it, you can take it apart and grease it, but it’s a short term fix. The bad part is that it shoves into the front shaft and carrier bearing which destroys it. It’s made to be non serviceable, therefore requires a replacement driveshaft to be installed. Very expensive from Ford. My driveshaft ruined both the carrier bearing and the transfer case. Truck had a horrible vibration that didn’t go away even after the driveshaft was replaced with an aftermarket one. The limited slip clutches went bad, and it had an IWE fail too. I spent about 10k getting all that fixed in addition to the lower ball joints, and new transmission lines installed before they snapped off unexpectedly as they do with the 6R80 transmission that will be decimated by that happening. I love my truck though, and figured fixing it would be way cheaper than buying a new one that won’t be built any better.
I'm being chased by axles lately! I just rebuilt a Dana 45... yes 45 and that was my first time in this world - it was kinda ugly. The upper and lower axle arms on my 64 Bonneville I just had to re-bush with liquid poly. Seems, like you say, things come in waves. I once bought a 1967 MGB that had a terrible vibration and the guy was sick and tired of the whole car... believe that or not, and it was only a clump of mud on the driveshaft. After cleaning it was fine and I offered the car back to the guy and he laughed and said "you keep it man". I hope you get to rebuild this unit and I'd love to see your methods on this. I've watched many videos on axle rebuilds now and it seems everyone has slightly differing (Punny huh) methods and your ways are simple and work well every time. I'll be watching! Bobby
Get it to the speed it's vibrating then shift it into nutrail if the vibration goes away it's engine or transmission, if it is still vibrating it's tailshaft bushing towards driveshaft back and possibly rear end.
OLd video but i will add a bad u joint cant always be verified with the wiggle test and looking for play. i just had a vibration i even felt in steering wheel and replaced tires and re balanced them etc but i took my driveshaft off and sure enough front u joint was siezing i also heard a click when taking off occasionally.
What about to start when you have a vibration from 45-50 then comes back at 70-80? Then while riding at 75 it vibrates for 4 miles then smooths out for 7-8 miles. Its goes in and out.
Thank you did this video!!! This video described everything of all the symptoms I am currently experiencing with my 2002 Toyota Highlander 4wd. Now I have an idea and target. Thank you!!!!
