I love how as we hear the genuine thoughts and feelings of the woman, the aspect ratio widens, because we’re no longer seeing her through her posts and pictures, we are seeing HER.

Bo is a master at getting you to laugh at someone or something, and then making you feel like an asshole for thinking you were better than anybody.

I love how he's not really mocking the people, in fact he reminds you there's a real person behind all the pageantry, he's mocking the medium that has cultivated that behavior.

"You go from all this humour, and satire, and then it suddenly gets serious" - that's Bo in a nut shell. He lures you in with brilliant comedy, then cuts deep into your soul.

One thing that makes the mom thing hit even harder, one of the photos is likely a birthday shot pointing at "27" balloons. If she lost her mom a decade ago, she was only 17 when it happened.

As a basic white girl on IG who lost my mum 9 years ago this song destroyed me when I first heard it and it still raises a tear. Was not prepared for that tone change. An amazing one from Bo <3

"A couple of doves, 3 little words and a ring on her finger from the person that she loves..."

Is connected to the "Mama I got a boyfriend and I'm crazy about him"

Meaning she got married along the way after that realism

"Give a hug and kiss to dad-" both of her parents are dead. She's alone. T.T

I want to highlight how "she" talks about all the achievements she accomplishes but will never be able to really show her mom and dad her new boyfriend or the appartment... but still makes the best of it and keeps going. This makes me so incredible sad, I literally started crying.

Some of Bo's best songs you can find on Youtube are "All Eyes on Me," "Can't Handle This," and "Art is Dead". All of these are amazing songs I'd love to hear your thoughts on. Happy reacting!

The sad part is how the sincere part of the song is lost in the circus of the song. Just like the genuine posts on Instagram

The part @10:00 and the frame is so important to that scene. The black bars are a framing of what the world looks like according to Instagram. When the "white girl" starts revealing their personal details involving their parents, the black bars are widening to give you more of a view into the entire scene. You see more of an unfiltered view into life of the white girl. Also, you'll note in Bo's recording room that when the black bars open up, you get to see more of the clutter and mess in the room that are filtered out when the bars are closed in on the subject. The black bars are a metaphor for opening up to the audience that there's messy aspects of the white girls real life vs what's filtered out on instagram. Bo's a genius.

That's what Bo does. He invites you onto a ship of self-importance and shallow perspective. Then he steers it into the uncertain waters of complexity and nuance, knowing damn well it won't hold up.

And he lets you see just how fXXking flimsy the S.S. Facade is when it's met with things like emotional accountability and personal empathy.

Then he lets us go back to harbor with just enough of the vessel left in tact to continue the illusion. Leaving us with a reminder, maybe a challenge, but not an obligation.

Honestly this resonated with me so much. I lost both my parents within a year of each other and I spent so long pretending to be ok with it. But now I own it, I post things that make me feel warm and fuzzy inside, that are cliche and unbelievably white because they make me happy. We all deserve to be happy in spite of our tragedies, and if that’s a pumpkin spice latte and a quote about “live, laugh, love” then who cares?

@monodescarado 3 years ago

With one small scene, Bo is able to turn the attention on us and away from the White Woman. Who are we to judge these people, when we don’t actually know anything about them? We don’t know their life, their struggles, their coping mechanisms. If it makes them feel good to put up performative images, possibly projecting the happy life they want to have but don’t, then who are we to mock them for it.

The scene is a very smart inclusion. We are the targets of this commentary. Not the White Women.

One thing about Bo Burnham, he will always lead with empathy and he never punches down

@xanadu6784 4 years ago

It's kind of Bo's wheelhouse to make funny songs that you laugh at, then pull the rug out from under you. He is the master of the gut punch. Make you complicit it something uncomfortable, and force you to reconcile the two within the song. He does it masterfully in songs like, "Kanye Rant (Can't Handle This)", "All Eyes on Me" and, "How The World Works".

He also talks a lot in his songs about the act of performing, and what that means to him. In this song, I think that Bo realized that, "White women of instagram" are ripe for making fun of, with their self-centered need to be the center of attention, but also realizes that what they are doing isn't all that different from what he is doing. He is trying to curate an internet audience to pay attention to him, he is just as self absorbed, which is why he puts himself literally into the role of a instagrammer. The moment of opening up (Literally) and being vulnerable, seeing the humanity in another, reflects his own emotional needs. He can make fun of them in a good natured way, but he knows he isn't better then them. He isn't even different from them.

This was a great piece of art. It’s even more impressive thinking about how he managed to get each shot perfect, because “Inside” was all just him, inside a room, setting up lights and filming. So, he had to actually stage and take those selfies.

i think another layer to the tonal shift is how people will talk about all this personal stuff on social media. like, don't get me wrong, i love the perspective of "you never know what someone's going through viewed through the lens of their insta, but in true Bo fashion, it has layers of meaning.
