Deep beneath the streets of Bolton lies a hidden world that most people walking through the town centre never know exists.
In this exploration, we head underground to discover the old Victorian infrastructure beneath Bolton — historic stone-built culverts, tunnels and underground passages that were constructed as the town expanded during the Industrial Revolution.
These forgotten structures once played an important part in Bolton's development, carrying watercourses beneath the rapidly growing town and helping to manage the waterways that had shaped the area for centuries. Today, sections of this Victorian underground survive beneath streets, buildings and industrial remains.
We follow the course of the River Croal underground, exploring the remarkable brick and stone architecture, arched chambers and dark passages hidden beneath modern Bolton. Above ground, much of this industrial landscape has disappeared or been redeveloped, but underneath, parts of the old town remain remarkably intact.
This is a journey into a side of Bolton that very few people ever get to see — the forgotten Victorian world beneath the town centre.
⚠️ Exploration of underground structures can be extremely dangerous. This video is for documentary and historical interest. Do not attempt to enter restricted, flooded or unstable structures.
