How do you release a tight SCM muscle? In this video, Lauren Meffen, MA, CCC-SLP, CLT, demonstrates a gentle sternocleidomastoid (SCM) release technique for neck muscle tightness.

The SCM runs along each side of the neck and helps you turn and tilt your head. Watch Lauren identify the muscle and demonstrate where to place your hands for the release. Use gentle pressure and stop if you feel pain or dizziness.

If you've had head and neck cancer surgery or radiation, check with your healthcare team before trying hands-on techniques over a healing or sensitive area.

Always follow your surgeon's recommendations regarding when to begin exercises. Not every exercise is appropriate for every patient, and your rehabilitation plan should be guided by your healthcare team.
