Where do Sephardic surnames really come from? A list of surnames—González, Rodríguez, Ramírez—has been circulating for years, promising to reveal a hidden Jewish origin. In this video, we debunk this myth using linguistics and documented history, review what the 2008 genetic study by the University of Leicester and Pompeu Fabra University actually demonstrated about Sephardic ancestry in the Iberian population, and trace the documentary trail of surnames that can be verified by name and surname since 1492: Abravanel, Benveniste, Espinosa (Spinoza's family), and Mendes-Nasi. We conclude with the only known case where a surname and a real genetic signature coincide: the Cohen haplotype.
📌 In this episode:
00:00 The myth circulating online
00:50 Why surname lists are anachronistic
03:30 The suffix "-ez" and why it proves nothing
06:40 What the 2008 genetic study demonstrates (and what it doesn't)
09:50 Surnames that are documented: Abravanel, Benveniste, Espinosa, Mendes-Nasi
16:30 Cohen: the only case where DNA and surname match
19:40 Belmonte, the 2015 law, and what remains today
