Cutting Cypress in the swamp.

Koehn Logging

Started off Monday getting the job set up and mounting the duals on the skidder. Tuesday we put the Bell to work cutting a load of cypress and skidding it out. By Wednesday and Thursday, the swamp got way too wet to run the Bell, so we switched to cutting by hand and skidding them out through the deep mud with the duals.

This would have been my dream as a young fella. All we had was a JD 440B a super splitter and a bunch of Husqvarnas.

Nice working down there, it seems like. We always cut in gnarly, hilly, or boggy places, or sometimes both. Never used a grapple skidder before; it looks like it keeps your wood a lot cleaner for the most part. We had to use a cable skidder because of where we'd have to go. Miss those days, good times. Stay safe out there, boys.

Great video! I had to look up Cypress trees in the swamps. I didn't realize they are highly valued. Our boys take a variety of logs to several different mills in Georgia and Alabama, but not Cypress. Interesting to see how different the machines are than the ones we use.

Bypassing your hinge cuts makes your hinge just that thin cut behind it.

You have a good channel. You might be right about not wearing glasses...until you aren't.

Good stuff guys! What's the use for those long cypress logs?

Wear some ear protection and some safety pants when running that saw.... You'll thank me in 20 years.

Are those the tires that you had to cut extra holes in and add a piece to weld like last week

It's been almost 45 years since I cut white pine that size now I dont like anything bigger than 2ft, it's a age thing. I see Owen drives grapple skidder like I did, push with boom to get over a hump or stump, that works most of time, but when cable was needed I ran it between the grapple tongs but then the 1982 ,540 JD skidder with grapple wasn't as big as yours. What do have besides a panic button if you get that big skidder stuck.........

I never seen cypress in mid-coast ME area I dont think it grows in ME. From what I google cypress is a rot resistant tree good for lumber and or shingles, but as straight and tall those are they look good for $5000.00 light-poles up here in ME. Are they going to a special mill that takes a 6hr round trip, that seems like a long ways to haul logs........

How is it you can cut wood with chainsaw without getting sawdust in eyes, I cant cut 5 min without eye protection.......

PS. This was good Sunday afternoon movie.......
