What Happens When Amish Families Move Into Appalachian Towns?

There is a county in Appalachia where almost half the people are Amish. Buggies on the shoulder, furniture shops, sawmills, and Amish families rooted there for two centuries. And it looks nothing like the struggling Appalachia most people picture. Holmes County, Ohio, is one of only two Appalachian counties in the state rated competitive by the Appalachian Regional Commission. In March of 2026, it had the lowest unemployment rate in all of Ohio.
