John Noakes was the fearless face of Blue Peter — but years later he made a remarkable admission: “Given my time again I wouldn’t have done Blue Peter.” Why did one of Britain’s most loved television presenters come to feel that way?
This John Noakes documentary tells the story behind the cheerful Blue Peter image — the danger, the pressure, the extraordinary stunts and the private man millions of viewers never really knew.
From climbing Nelson’s Column and jumping with the RAF Falcons to his terrifying bobsleigh accident, John became famous for apparently being afraid of nothing. But behind the scenes, his experience of Blue Peter was far more complicated.
We look at John’s relationship with formidable Blue Peter editor Biddy Baxter, the relentless workload, his unforgettable partnership with Shep and the story behind “Get down, Shep!”
The film also follows John beyond Blue Peter: his adventures with wife Vicky, their life at sea, a frightening incident involving their yacht, his later years in Mallorca and the remarkably candid interview in which he looked back on his television career.
And finally, we follow John Noakes’ story to its extraordinary last chapter and the unusual farewell his family chose for one of British television’s most unforgettable personalities.
For millions who grew up watching John Noakes, Shep, Valerie Singleton, Peter Purves and Blue Peter, this is a nostalgic journey back to a golden period of British television — but also a deeper look at the real man behind the television legend.

A further note about Shep: Published accounts of his separation from John differ. Reports on Richard Marson’s 2023 biography of Biddy Baxter, including Vicky Noakes’s recollections, say Shep remained with John after Blue Peter and was later rehomed with the programme’s animal carer, Edith Menezes, when John and Vicky decided to go sailing.
Vicky recalled a particularly touching reunion shortly before Shep’s death. Despite his failing eyesight, the elderly dog recognised John’s voice and came running to him. That memory moved me deeply—a lovely glimpse of the bond they still shared.
