What if we find an asteroid flying straight to Earth?
Right now, as you read this, dozens of telescopes across the planet are peering into the night sky — searching for moving specks among the stars. These are near-Earth asteroids. More than 30,000 of them have already been cataloged, and hundreds of new ones are added every year. But the one that matters the most may not have been found yet.
NASA's documentary Planetary Defenders introduces us to the people who stand between our planet and the next cosmic strike. From the observational telescopes in Arizona, where discoveries are made every night, to the Minor Planet Center at Harvard, where data from around the world converge. From the Goldstone Radar in the Mojave Desert, which maps asteroids with two-meter resolution, to the historic DART mission, which changed the orbit of a celestial body for the first time in human history.
This is the story of Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9, which crashed into Jupiter in 1994 and woke up the world. About the Chelyabinsk meteorite, which came from the direction of the Sun and exploded with the energy of 25 Hiroshima bombs. About asteroid 2023 DZ2, which went from "possible to hit" to "crossed off the risk list" in five days. And about the NEO Surveyor space telescope, which will search for dark rocks by the heat they emit.
Dinosaurs went extinct because they didn't have a space program. We do.
