I also grow Seminole pumpkins and the change that I've been trying to make in my garden this year is to focus less on the specialty crops that I enjoy that might not impact my food budget and focus more on crops that do affect the food budget in a more significant way. Seminole pumpkins has been one of those crops for me. They lay out long vines and they put down roots all along the vine. So even through a weed barrier fabric, they put down roots. I plant them in the spring in a central area in the center of what the large bed is at the end of the season. And then what I do is I take my weed barrier fabric and as the plants grow outward, I run the weed barrier fabric around the outside or I tuck the weed barrier fabric in towards the inner part of the planting bed, but I don't pin that down. I'll just lay some of the vines on top of it. And then I'll pin down the outside edge. Then as a little time goes by and the vines grow a little more, I will just pull it out and the shade will suppress the weeds on the interior portion of the bed and then I get double my weed suppression from a single layer of weed barrier fabric. And then also I noticed I don't have to water as much because they're laying down roots through any weed barrier fabric or mulch all the way into the soil structure and drawing moisture from there. I did have to water two or three times this summer. I live in Zone 9A in Louisiana and it stays pretty dry during the middle of the summer, but they made it through and I got so much squash. I'm feeding my community and it probably at its largest size measured about 20 ft by about 15 ft. And all through the season, I would walk around the outside edge and pick up the vines and throw them back towards the center as once a week I would go out and I would pick any that had turned orange and then I would pick those vines up and toss them. Well, I say pick them up. Actually, I wear boots and I kick them back in towards the center of the planting bed and they hang on. They are amazingly resilient. The Seminole pumpkins make so much food.

The way these pests keep attacking my yellow straight neck and patty pan squash I need to try something like this instead. Please keep recommending these vegetable varieties that do well with pest pressure. 'Merlin' cucumber has been a revelation!

In all seriousness, thanks for this! I'm in (mercifully less hot and humid) SW WI, but even here we have absolute fits with vine borers and squash bugs, so I appreciate the leads on some squash varieties that can handle the insect pressure. Winding things down for the season up here since winter's coming (but it's pleasant and sunny this week, perfect for outdoor chores), but I'm looking forward to growing some of these come spring!

After my garden got attacked by deer, my one zucchino rampicante plant successfully produced one squash. Although I had a trellis, it grew on the ground and curled. It still looks great though. I have it stored in my basement and plan on cooking it on Thanksgiving. Per your encouragement, my garden is getting a fence now, I'm having new soil brought in and I'm already planning for spring. I tried to grow Seminole Pumpkin this year and it was completely dead by end of May. I planted 7 varieties of winter squash this year in 7B Virginia and I always struggle with the borer and squash bugs, but of the 7 types I grew Seminole was the only one to completely die and fail this year.

Four of the others were very minimally productive, but I blame some bad weather and pests.

Tahitian Melon was my winner. Enormous plant, HUGE vine base, insanely productive. I'm getting dozens of pounds of squash from one plant even after I lost like 8 fruits to groundhogs and squirrels.

One thing a lot of gardeners overlook is that the real issue isn’t always how much fertilizer you use — it’s **when the plant can actually absorb those nutrients and how healthy the root system is**. If the roots are stressed, adding more nitrogen can make the leaves look greener while the plant becomes even more unbalanced. There’s actually one small sign on the leaves that can reveal this pretty early, but most people miss it.
