On February 28, 2022, Outback Wrangler star Chris “Willow” Wilson was killed during a crocodile egg-collecting operation in remote Arnhem Land after the Robinson R44 helicopter carrying him beneath it lost power. Wilson fell from the sling line, while pilot Sebastian Robinson survived with life-changing injuries. What first appeared to be a tragic helicopter accident soon developed into a major investigation involving fuel exhaustion, unsafe sling procedures, allegedly falsified flight records and attempts to obstruct the investigation. My takeaway is that being famous on TV for going after crocodiles is dangerous because you will ironically be killed by anything besides crocodiles.

I worked in aviation. When you are operating on thin financial margins and in areas hard to get to by authorities? Shady things happen.

Operators like this have contributed to some stigma around Robinson helicopters. They aren’t inherently a terrible design, but they’re so much cheaper than other options it means that some operators can afford them when they probably shouldn’t be doing rotary wing work to begin with, since they tend to be the type to do things like skimp on maintenance and training.

Australian here... until now, i had no idea what caused this accident or why criminal prosecutions were happening? This has been all over Australian media for years, but our media is honestly shit, high drama and no substance, that's all we get, so of course i had no idea what was actually going on.

My take-away is that CASA needs to be proactive at finding aircraft businesses that falsify maintenance records and helping industry whisleblowers who ALWAYS get screwed over for doing the right thing.

As a man whose adventures and experiences are exceptional and white knuckle inducing, it’s a grave travesty that his death was caused by the sole actions of a selfish, greedy, unethical and corrupt “man” whose only desire was to save money whilst he was willing to sacrifice the LIVES of others, except HIM!! Disconnecting a Hobbs on anything is a big nono here in the US. Disconnecting it on any aircraft should be automatic prison time. Engines must be inspected and rebuilt at specific intervals and that wouldn't be possible without the Hobbs.

This was a shock to everyone, just as much as Matt Wright's accusations afterwards. Long been a fan of his and the show, so when he was accused of nefarious behaviour afterwards it came as a huge shock. RIP Chris, this should never have happened.

There's got to be a better way to collect eggs. It just seems way too dangerous for a few eggs. Plus you have people who cut corners and try to do it cheap. That's a recipe for disaster.
