Choosing the right bass lure doesn't start at the pond.
It starts before you ever leave the house.
In this MASTER video, I'm showing you how I select my lures for a day of bank fishing by putting together the information I already have: season, bass behavior, weather, wind, feeding windows, water conditions, strike-zone size and the presentation I want to use. ๐ฃ
Instead of carrying a thousand lures and changing something every few minutes, I want to have a plan before I get to the pond.
Here's the system I use:
Start with bass behavior โ What should bass be doing based on the season?
Look at recent weather โ What happened yesterday and the day before?
Check today's conditions โ Cloud cover, temperature and other conditions can change how bass behave.
Check the wind โ Where is it blowing and what could it be doing to baitfish?
Find high-percentage water โ Where will those conditions put the bass?
Consider the strike zone โ Are bass willing to chase, or do I need to keep the presentation tight?
Choose the presentation โ How do I need to make the bait behave?
THEN choose the lure.
That's the order.
Bass behavior โ Conditions โ Location โ Strike zone โ Presentation โ Lure
And I always have a backup plan.
That doesn't mean carrying three tackle boxes.
It means having a few different presentations ready in case the bass don't behave the way I expected.
For me, that might mean starting with a ChatterBait or swim jig, testing the situation with a frog, then going to a weightless Pit Boss, Texas rig, Free Rig or lipless crankbait if the conditions or bass behavior tell me I need to change.
The biggest lesson?
Don't change lures just because you're not catching bass.
First ask:
Can I change my PRESENTATION?
That's how you stop chasing lures and start understanding bass.

Here's something 35+ years of bank fishing taught me:
More lures don't necessarily mean more bass.
Before I ever leave the house, I'm asking:
What season are we in?
What should the bass be doing?
What happened with the weather?
Where's the wind going?
How big is the strike zone likely to be?
What presentation matches those conditions?
THEN I choose my lures.
And if I'm not getting bit?
Before I cut and tie something new, I ask:
Can I change my PRESENTATION instead?
That's one of the biggest things that's helped me become a better bank angler.
๐ What's the FIRST thing you consider when choosing a lure?
Let's help each other become better bank anglers.
