Honda ST1100A - Rear disc and Pad change - Part 3

A bit of a long video but there is lots to cover, so today i change the rear disc and change the rear pads on my Honda ST1100A Pan European , not done this on an ST1100 before and not sure what i am going to find, judging by the state of of the rest of the bike i am expecting the worst as it doesn't look as though this bike has been looked after by its previous owners

Great vid and useful comments too. I've just rebuilt my calipers, waiting on a new disk and then its swing arm off and change the alternator. Love this bike..... most of the time

Tip: No need to completely remove the muffler. Just remove the hanger bolt and loosen the two clamp bolts underneath then rotate the muffler downward and out of the way, leaving it attached.

Thanks a lot for the video. I started to play with my "new" Pan 1991. First job was to change the rear pads because rear brake didn't work. Thanks again for share your work as amateur.

I enjoyed the vid. The splines on the wheel should be lubricated with Honda Moly paste/grease (Honda M77 Assembly Paste) with a minimum 60% moly. It is quite a dry paste. It looked like grease on yours although I couldn't really tell. Also there are 3 O-rings in the rear wheel. These should be checked and replaced if necessary. Its safe to say that whoever designed the swingarm on these bikes did design the rest of the bike 😂😂

Also the short fat bolt or "stopper bolt" as it's called that threads into the swing arm and locates into the caliper bracket is supposed to be installed and tightened before you do up the axle nut. Notice that it was quite tight to undo, they are torqued to 51 lb/ft and have thread lock applied.

I would have put silicone grease between the disc sgeel.and the aluminium to help prevent future corrosion

It's important on the ABS/TCS ST1100 to use genuine Honda rear brake pads. Yes aftermarket can fit but they are not as thick as genuine Honda, hence the pistons protrude too far and are exposed to the elements - then they corrode & seize.

Undo the bottom shock bolt let the swing arm drop down

I have just done my pads but the wheel is binding,apparently sometimes you have to replace the seals as well,i couldn't see if your calliper had a small metal shim on (i think they are for anti squeal),good video by the way

One question as I probably need to get my front disc rotors replaced: you don't use loctite or any such locking agent on disc bolts? My front left disc had a bolt came off when riding, and people on forums have attributed it to not using any locking agent when installing the bolts. The previous owner replaced the rotors just over a year ago. Caused a lot of expensive damage for my ST1100 (and could have ended a lot worse than it did), so I'm definitely not taking any chances when I do the job.
