You have to admit, the sales people who came up with selling a bunch of rich oil billionaire coke addicts a ''line'' was peak brain receptor hacking. ''Let's make a line!'' would instantly trigger a dopamine reaction.
My entire engineering career was coming close to retirement when I first heard about "The Line". I designed HVAC systems for large industrial and governmental facilities. This not only gave me understanding on how to provide enough "fresh" air and vent out the "stale" air from a specific-sized structure, but I had to work closely with the other engineers who built the structure as well. This brings me to when I heard about this "Line" building project. I had worked on hotel-casinos across Las Vegas and Reno - hot, desert conditions not too dissimilar to the location of this Saudi linear city, except it's hotter and a lot more dry in Saudi Arabia. The air handling alone would have made this project impossibly expensive to keep operating. The amount of water required could not be handled by desalination as proposed (it takes a LOT of energy to remove salt from seawater), then use that water for everything people would need as well as to use to humidify the air through the AC system? It was never feasible.
All that before the costs of every other system this line city would require and there's no Prince wealthy enough to cover the cost of this project. The physical restraints and complications of such a project would also doom the effort - nothing construction-related falls within budget as material costs constantly fluctuate and they fluctuate upwards, very rarely downwards. I've seen orders for a hundred tons of steel sheet begin at a certain price just to see the cost of steel triple in six months when the contractor allotted for a 50% increase, not a 300% increase and instantly the project is operating on a hair-thin margin for loss or maybe squeak out a tenth of a percent profit just because the cost of ONE type of material spiked. Now think of all the steel, concrete, glass this line city would need. Any of those critical components fluctuate much in price and the total cost went from hundreds of billions to two trillion dollars - so they reduce the length by half and keep dumping money into the project just to have the cost increase another 25% more than estimated and the cycle of shortening the structure continues while the price skyrockets.
This project was a boondoggle from the get-go. Only the delirious thought it would ever come to completion.
