If i can throw in a helpful voicing excercise: play an auxillary high F (aka front f). And SLOWLY bend the pitch down. I can bend mine down a fourth or so and its given me a lot of control for tuning palm key/altissimo notes. It's very similar to playing on just the mouthpiece but you get more resistance since the whole horn is together. I learned this from a masterclass with Chris Creviston.

50 yr pro/semi-pro here; I think most of us need reminding every once in a while to relax, not to smile, to poke that lip out. Looks to me like you're not obsessed with taking lots of mouthpiece, but rather letting it sit where it's comfortable.

Valuable info. What I'd like to fix is the "speeded-up" tempos of digital recordings of digital (and analog) originals. It destroys the groove of the original up tempo (not rushed) and produces articulations that are unplayable.

Thanks dude, been working on this stuff since Jan this year and really seeing some improvements in intonation and tone, just wish I'd found such a succinct tutorial about 11 months ago (lol). It's a long road sax family, just keep playing and enjoy the journey.

Good video. I studied with Joe Allard in the 70s and overtones and sound production were his main lessons. As you state, it is a life long exercise. I am once again struggling with low note production on the tenor so your video has brought me back to the basics. Thank you and all the best!

Thanks Magnus! There's so much great teaching in this video. I don't remember how many times I started using the Rascher book, struggled with overtones for a few weeks, got discouraged and quit. I've never been good at altissimo, mostly because all my mechanics were wrong- breathing, air support, embouchure...this video of yours breaks it all down wonderfully, without giving me arcane confusing tips like "open your throat" or "lower your larynx" which is actual teaching I got from a professional that did me absolutely no good and just confused me further. I'm rewatching this video right now and I'm starting the exercises my next practice session. Thanks again!
