In 1901, Theodor Herzl, the founder of the Zionist movement, traveled to Istanbul with a massive financial proposal for Sultan Abdul Hamid II of the Ottoman Empire. Backed by wealthy European bankers, Herzl offered to clear the entire foreign debt of the Ottoman Empire in exchange for a charter allowing Jewish settlement in Palestine.
At Yildiz Palace, Sultan Abdul Hamid II delivered his historic rejection, stating that he could not sell even a handspan of Palestine because it belonged not to him, but to the people who had defended it with their lives.
