Meister Eckhart was the most brilliant theologian the Dominican Order ever produced. He was also condemned as a heretic by the pope. This full documentary explores the extraordinary life of the medieval mystic who prayed for God to rid him of God, and whose forbidden ideas about the soul, detachment, and the Godhead shook the foundations of the Catholic Church.

Born around 1260 in Thuringia, Eckhart rose through the ranks of the Dominican Order to become a two-time Master of Theology at the University of Paris, an honor shared only with Thomas Aquinas. He governed one of the order's largest provinces. He preached to thousands in German rather than Latin, delivering radical teachings on the ground of the soul, Gelassenheit, and the birth of the Word directly to ordinary people. The Church responded with a heresy trial. He died before the verdict. The papal bull In Agro Dominico condemned his ideas in 1329. Seven centuries later, those ideas are more alive than ever, influencing thinkers from Martin Luther to Heidegger to Zen Buddhism.
