The only one ever built? This is a 2003 MINI R53 Cooper S JCW 225hp road-legal race car – built by John Cooper Garages and MINI Motorsport to be driven to the track, raced, and then driven home again.
And in this video, Jamie gets behind the wheel to find out what it’s actually like to drive over 20 years later.
This isn't simply an R53 Cooper S that's been modified for track use. The car was specially commissioned from new with a very unusual brief: a road car for the track.
The original period paperwork documents the involvement of John Cooper Garages, MINI Motorsport and Tony Franks, and records that this was the only car built to be driven home from track days.
Producing around 225hp, it came from an incredibly interesting period in the early history of the R53 and John Cooper Works, when the limits of the new MINI platform were still being explored.
The idea was brilliantly simple:
🏁 Drive it to the circuit
🏁 Race it on track
🏁 Drive it home again
No trailer. No dedicated tow car. A genuine road-legal MINI designed to perform on the circuit.
More than two decades later, the car survives – along with the paperwork that tells its story – and we've finally had the opportunity to get it out on the road and experience it for ourselves.
In this video we take a closer look at the car, its history and what makes it different, before Jamie gets behind the wheel of what could be one of the most fascinating R53 JCWs ever built.
Should MINI have put something like this into production?
