Today, I visited Mayuguno at Mama Grace's house, where we sat down and had a powerful conversation about traditional customs, tribal practices, and some of the experiences he has encountered growing up in Africa.
What he told me was something I never expected to hear!
Mayuguno explained a particular traditional belief concerning a husband, his wife, and the birth of a baby boy. He also shared his personal experience and explained why he chose to escape a practice he did not want to follow.
What made this conversation even more surprising is that his wife is currently expecting a baby, and he does not yet know whether they will have a boy or a girl.
As I listened to his story, I found myself asking so many questions. I wanted to understand the tradition, its meaning, and how it has affected his life.
This is a personal story about culture, family, tradition, and the difficult choices people sometimes have to make.
