My grandfather worked there in the sixties and seventies or so. Willie Thomson. This was after his being a ploughman. When as a child I once went to see him there in the station he would tell me that a man had his legs crushed between the front of a train and its arrival bay wall. The things on the train front and the wall, the posts that jut out made of metal with discs did it. Gave me a sensible fear of falling beneath the step of carriages. He was also a ticket man and in the war he manned the signal box at Dalwhinnie's Drumochter Pass, A white painted BnB house is still there. At Balsporan. Its next to the track. In wartime trains packed with soldiers roared by or paused. My granny did a lot of the signal box shifts too, and tend the children and goats and chickens. It seemed a blissful life to me but when I wanted to go and live there decades later my grandad said that I would go mad because the train track sleeper did that to him after five years. That and the isolation. He had to count the bolts on the sleepers every day or so. I think it drove him into his mind. A friend told him to work breaking stone at a quarry for a while, to draw him outside of his mind again and back into physical existence. Quarries instead of pills back in them days. Yet the toughest of men had big tender hearts...

These photos are a highly detailed record that could answer all sorts of detailed questions under close scrutiny and probably produce quite a few more. Exciting and mind blowing stuff. For example, I've been aware of Canal Street station and the cable hauled Scotland Street tunnel opposite Platform 19 but always wondered about the layout and exact placement of Canal Street.

Fascinating history.   I've lived in Edinburgh since 1963, but before that lived in Fife.  Had many a day trip to the capital via the old steam trains.  While living in the city I've made many trips back to Fife, to Glasgow, London, and elsewhere using the station.   I also lived for some years close to the entrance to the Scotland Street tunnel in King George V Park.  It has been used for several different purposes since it closed, including as an air raid shelter in WW2  (the toilet blocks that were constructed for this purpose are still there).  In the 1970s it was used for growing mushrooms, then it was taken over by a car dealer to store vehicles. The massive downside to the tunnel is that all the streets than run above it are badly affected by subsidence.  Although this stopped some decades ago, many of the houses on these streets have floors which slant quite significantly.

Hi Ed, That was a wonderful trip back to my home. I am writing this from Perth Western Australia and getting close to 77 years old. My old pal and I spent a lot of time train spotting back in the day. The train trip from Abbeyhill Station to Waverley was Tuppence. So sad to see the Waverley Markets gone. Thank you so much. John

This video is a simply stunning piece of work from beginning to end.  The use of archival material with modern techniques is better done than anything I’ve seen on Youtube.  I was first there around 1959 and it brought so many memories.  As a young kid I was fascinated by Railways - my granny lived in Bonnyrigg on the Penicuik line and (before lot was built) I could stand in the bedroom and track the expresses through their smoke travelling past Newtongrange through the colliery.  One of my major life regrets is a memory of walking past Princes St station in the last year with my Granny.  Knowing it was closing I wanted to peep inside but she rushed me on (indeed to Waverley to catch the train home to Bonnyrigg).  I wish oh so much that I’d seen inside.
