Good job.  My "go to" for old dry wood like that is a 50/50 blend of pine tar and turpentine.  Even just using turpentine to clean the wood is a great way to go as it soaks into the wood and preserves it.  In the days of yore, pine tar and turpentine was used to keep ships afloat, protecting the wood, canvas and rope from the environment.  It's been found that the pine tar and turpentine penetrates deep and has natural anti-microbial/fungal compounds that will stop the little amoebas that rot wood.  A top coat of something like linseed oil (flax oil rather than BLO) is great for a shinier finish since it's a drying oil and traditional for gunstocks, but while it keeps water out of the stock it doesn't stop the microbes that eat the wood.  So, on old guns, I really like a few coats of tar-n-turp after my stain, and follow that up with a top dressing of linseed oil for it's glossier appearance.  Takes forever to dry, but I think it's worth it.  And definitely fun on old beater guns like you've got there.

Good job but I found out that the best is wood sawdust from the wood mix with clear fast cure epoxy and when you sand it and put oil or true oil it will blend right in.

Nice project. I like the cocoa idea. A better color match might be coffee ground super fine for espresso - - I have used that with super glue on both walnut and sassafras and gotten pretty much invisible results. If you don't have espresso around, maybe a coffee shop would sell you a couple tablespoons to try out.

Nice job bringing an old gun back to life!  I've had some luck using a clear cyanoacrylate and mixing it with the sanding dust from the wood.  It still won't be a perfect match to the original but it's pretty close.  The sanding dust doesn't seem to interfere with the accelerant.

I would have used saw dust in the mix, and used pins. The pins will help keep it from moving during taping / clamping.

You just removed all the grip points with that dremel brush. A couple blind pins from the butt end and it would secure it with the glue.
