Creating a fantasy world from scratch is no small endeavour, but anything worth doing has its challenges. Mapping the world out is a crucial step: it helps the readers or the players visualise the world, it helps you to plan out your story, and it gives the story a much needed anchor to realism.
I've had a few questions recently on how I go from a sketch to a full map as a professional mapmaker -- and in the interest of getting the good word out, in encouraging as many new mapmakers as possible -- here is the step by step process that I use to map out fantasy worlds.
