In this video, we're looking at some of the more viral 3D prints right now, to figure out: are they actually worth your filament (and time?) Or are they just 3D Printed gimmicks?

Because let's face it - while we all LOVE functional 3D prints, there's nothing worse than finding a list of cool things to 3d print, then throwing half of them in the trash because they don't actually work. Imprecise parameters, fragile designs that don't last... ugh.

So in this video, let me use up MY room full of 3D printers (and free filament) to do the testing for you... and figure out which ones are actual, USEFUL 3d prints, and which ones are filament better left on the spool ;)

We'll look at some plain old fun, cool things to 3d print. Some functional 3d prints. Some bizarre 3d printing models. And something very promising - a kind of "gridfinity for your pocket."

Spoiler alert: about half of these 3d prints didn't work as advertised.

I don’t think the boomerang got a fair shake. They normally need plenty of open space not surrounded by trees.

Guess you missed that day in school when they discussed Alcatraz as being considered an escape-proof prison. The fruit fly trap is perfectly named because of that specific point. Speculation on my part, but maybe your print of it didn't work very well because of the crappy print. The amount of threading and fuzz was insane.

For the can cooler, it might be easier, instead of filling it with water, buy a bunch of gel packs (say, 3"×3" ones) and stuff those down the sides. It won't leak, and you're less likely to experience layer separation due to the water expanding as it freezes.

As someone who spent weeks 'perfecting' watertight printing (for vase mode prints, BION), the key is over-extrusion. You need to overextrude by a solid 5-10% (depending on filament type) to ensure proper squish between layers so water can't seep through. The caveat, of course, is the potential sacrifice to some quality on the exterior perimeters, so the less detail your print has, the better it'll look in the end.

Here's the problem I have videos like this (and it's not just this guy who does this, but it seems to be common among the hardcore OSHW/FOSS faction of 3D print content makers): they don't evaluate the models *as designed*. They get a model, which comes with a print profile and a material recommendation. What do they do?

"Here's what the designer said but I'm going to make this out of diamond-encrusted carbon-fiber polysaccharine-nucleic acid filament that's only $65 a spool (10% off if you use my discount code affiliate link). Nevermind that it has a completely different set of characteristics and chemical traits than PLA/PETG or whatever the designer used."

Then, inevitably, the test print breaks or is otherwise unusable/disappointing.

Just make the model, dude, *as is*, as it comes and with the parameters the designer calls for. THEN, if it does break or not work, see if you can come up with something better or some better print profile/material to use and show that too.

I need a review about this review video. I feel like this guy didn't give some of these items a fair evaluation, especially the boomerang. Who throws a boomerang like that??? After that segment, I immediately began to question every other segment.

Throwing a boomerang requires a bit of research to understand how it works and, above all, how to throw it – which you clearly haven’t done, otherwise you would have realised that a boomerang isn’t thrown horizontally but almost vertically, and in a very specific direction relative to the wind if you really want it to come back.

On the boomerang, they are thrown at approximately 1 o‘clock, I.e 5 to 10 degrees to the right from upright. That should give it a fair chance to perform. Yours was at 90 degrees if I saw it correctly.

7:00 the print could expose a tiny hole to fill when paused, then less chance of spilling when resumed

that lace thing is what comes with stretchy laces designed to convert laced shoes to slip ons.

you can't use random laces, and you have to cut the laces to remove the excess. the stretch laces are installed basically permanently

Fly trap isn't fair when compared to a glass trap. the fly's can see what they wanna eat or whatever they're doing there. Philharmonic has a seat for you. Thanks for saving some space in my recycle can.

For the can cooler, I think it would be better to use the gel from one of those freezable ice packs instead of water. You can just squirt it in there and then seal it.
