It blew my mind when I accidentally turned on the "God mode" cheat playing the Xbox version. I thought I had found an ultimate secret.

Carmack’s perfect combination of programming genius and ultra positive view on open source is why games are as good as they are now.  When drivers and graphics cards were a mess he pulled a power move and told the card business that they either support OpenGL, or they won’t play Id games.

Karl: "The game crashes randomly, something yoou don't want in speedrunning"
Fallout speedrunners:

I think it's VERY important to point out that the new official ports of Doom running in Unity has a graphics option for Vertical Sync (VSync) on by default, and at the very least in the PS4 release, it causes SERIOUS input lag, it really tripped me up at first and I didn't realize what was wrong. Make sure to turn it off, because it'll cripple your gameplay otherwise.
If the game feels oddly stiff and difficult for no seeming reason, this is why.

It also doesn't let you rebind your controls, which I think they should address.

"If you don't hold down the run key, you move slowly, which is obviously terrible for speedrunning."

Once again Karl, you have blown us away with your in depth understanding of Doom mechanics.

"So how do you play Doom, Unity or DosBox?"
"uhhhhh through Doom Eternal"

The day I figured out I could tape the shift key down was the best day of my young adult life

"DAUGHTER! Why did I find a pregnancy test in your room?"
"I'm speedrunning Doom!"
"Why? Can't you just get pregnant like other girls?"

Fun fact: There is a reverse engineering of PSX Doom that is available with source code. And there is a PC port of that code called PsyDoom. Maybe someone could speedrun that.

So you're telling me i could have had the best Doom game up to date but i got a Rugrats game instead?
I definitively wasted my PS1

Me: sees Doom running on an obscure device at 7:49 - "I bet that's LGR" - moments later see the LGR citation in the corner.

Well now I need to find a Tapwave zodiac with Doom so I can hold a world record in something.

Filthy doom trihard here, I just want to point out (even if you kinda nod to it) that all these ports are pretty cool but there's absolutely NO COMPARISON among any of these and the major community made PC ports prboom+ and gzdoom. PRBoom+ is the best for vanilla compatibility in demos and general gameplay (so that's why 99% of speedrunners use that or crispy/chocolate) and GZDoom is basically a full featured modern game engine with awesome mod support that also happens to run doom. I just think they both should have had a brief direct mention and then left out of the conversation since they absolutely crush the competition.

Fun fact: DOOM on PlayStation had three release variants: long box, standard jewel case, and greatest hits jewel case. The standard jewel case version is rare and  commands the highest price of the three among collectors.

DOOM on ps1 being a shining beacon of epicness are the perfect words to describe it.

Glad to see PS1 Doom getting the love it deserves! What a fantastic game.

I spent hours and hours playing doom on the ps1 as a kid. That "Williams entertainment" logo screen is seared in to my brain.

The lack of autorun on the OG game was a BIG problem for my Dad when he played it around release. He says his keyboard only supported holding 2 keys at once. 30 years later, and my laptop has the same limitation!
