Old School Movies

The Academy Awards didn’t always get it right. Over the years, some of the greatest Westerns ever made were completely snubbed by the Oscars, while lesser films took home the trophies.

From gritty revisionist Westerns to timeless classics, these films prove that great cinema doesn’t always win awards.

Some of the greatest westerns in my experience are listed here THE WILD BUNCH, RIDE THE HIGH COUNTRY, THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALENCE, McCABE & MRS. MILLER, ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST. Those others here that I have experienced also have their notable moments, IMO

Other snubs: Little Big Man, Jeremiah Johnson, The Gunfighter, 3:10 To Yuma (1957), Winchester '73, The Professionals, The Ox-Bow Incident, My Darling Clementine, The Magnificent Seven and Red River - not a single Oscar for any and all of them.

BTW - When you're talking Randolph Scott and Budd Boetticher, think I'd go with The Tall T over Ride Lonesome. It's Richard Boone's warm-up performance for Hombre, years later.

When you're dealing with a major western star, like Joel McCrea, it'd be nice to pronounce his name correctly.

"The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" is one of the great Westerns, and the best movie about Jesse James, and yes I know about "The Long Riders." It lost the Oscar to another Western, "No Country for Old Men."

The Wild - Writing nomination?-not a technical category; and Original Score?- again not a technical!

1956, should have been The Searchers with John Wayne winning Best Actor…instead of The King and I. The Searchers is the greatest western ever made, and one of the greatest films ever made.
