Keith Jarrett´s 'Jasmine' was my introduction to instrumental jazz. That´s when I first fell in love with Haden´s playing.

Charlie came to my high school in 2000 and we played a bunch of his music.
He told us never play a note you wouldn’t die for.
Completely changed how I view music to this day

Thanks for answering my question guys, Charlie Haden for life!

Pat Metheny' 80/81 album was my intro to Charlie Haden. Amazing album! That lead me to Ornette Coleman, then more Pat Metheny, then his work with Scofield and Lovano. Such an inspiration to musicians, and to me as a bassist. Cheers!

I'd totally love a pod diving into Ornette or even some more 'free jazz' examples (Late Trane, Eric Dolphy, pharaoh Sanders, etc.). I understand that it can be difficult to approach that music with an instructional lens, but there is certainly things to explore/learn about creativity, art and improvisation from those cats! It's like you said "Ornette is PLAYING THE BLUES"

I love "Emotion in Motion." Thanks for the ID. I saw Charlie Haden w/ the Keith Jarrett American Quartet. The group finished the night with Yaqui Indian Folk Song (From Treasure Island) and Charlie was weeping over his bass. I loved that big toned footprint of his and how all-in he was.

the trio with Charlie Haden, Geri Allen and Paul Motian was amazing

I follow his son Josh on Mastodon and he is always posting Charlie Haden listening suggestions.

Please do one on Quincy Jones' legacy! Many don't know of his beginnings as a jazz trumpeter!

My favourite Charlie Haden: a beautifully loose recording with the stunning Ernie Watts,Alan Broadbent,Billy Higgins-'Charlie Haden's private collection no 1'.This was his 50th birthday concert- August 6th 1987.Sublime stuff!

Man, you guys could have gone on for hours and hours about Mr Haden.
I loved his work with Pat Metheny including 80/81, Rejoicing, and their duet album Beyond the Missour Sky where do incredible versions of songs by Morricone from the movie Cinema Paradiso as well as a song by Josh Haden called "Spiritual." Also, Keith Jarrett's "American Quartet" with Dewey Redman is incredible but often forgotten.
Before this comment gets even longer, I'll mention that some great early Geri Allen can be heard with Mr Haden and Paul Motian as a great trio.
One last thing! There are some great live recordings of Mr Haden in various settings recorded at the Montreal Jazz Festival (must have been some kind of residency?)...
Also, "First Song" by Mr Haden should be a jazz standard.

When I saw the picture of Charlie, i had a big grin come over my face. When first hearing jazz, the bass solo was the thing that grabbed me the least—I couldn’t understand Eddie Gomez and other post-LaFaro virtuosos. Then I heard Charlie; I was so knocked out, I ran out to buy a bass. I came to love the Gomez and Peacock thing, of course, but hearing Charlie walk or play simple 4 note melody is still something that leaves me breathless. Ok. Can’t wait to watch the video. lol.

Adam is right, people know America is large, but they don't understand the sheer scale of it.

Charlie Haden's bass playing on the album "science fiction" by ornette coleman. He plays on every track and even hooks a wah up for "rock the clock". Some of the best bass playing I've ever heard.
