Judgement Day at Nuremberg: Hitler's Butchers Meet Their Fate - WW2 Documentary Special

World War Two

The Nuremberg Trials begin. Twenty-four of Hitler’s closest Nazi allies face judgment for crimes of aggressive war, mass enslavement, and genocide. At stake is more than justice for the dead; it’s the birth of a new legal order. We examine the trials, the accused, and whether Nuremberg delivered justice or simply vengeance.

Nuremberg aimed to outlaw wars of aggression and hold leaders accountable for mass atrocities. And yet, in the 20th and 21st centuries we've seen invasions, ethnic cleansing, and war crimes go unpunished. In 1945 the Allies were able to impose justice on Germany only after thoroughly defeating her. If international law depends on power politics, is there any way to make it truly work? Or will the powerful always find ways around it?

I was an intern at the UN War Crimes Tribunal for former Yugoslavia. The principals of the Nuremberg Trials were relied on heavily in those courts set up in the 1990s (there were very few Cold War-era war crime trials). However, the investigation of crimes had become much more complicated over 50 years, so some trials would go on for years reviewing forensics and DNA evidence.

Jackson's scathing response to the regime's supposed "ignorance" during his closing remarks was a work of art.

Sparty reading the names and offices of the defendants in German and then Sebastian the sentences for each one with cold conciseness hits hard.

Speer got off light, he was knees deep in the system and performed a show for the jury.

As an adolescent german myself, I'd like to add another layer towards the nuremburg trials.
By channeling all the evidence of the holocaust, the war of aggression and the insigths into the workings of nazi dictatorship it provided an accessible basis to teach on what has happened. Laying the first stone to "win the peace".
The nurembourg trials were in secondary education a cornerstone of both history education and social eduction (sozialkunde in german) and ensuring a german consciousness towards what has happened.

the absurd irony of those struggling with their sentence...
They were given trial, a hearing, a defense. That is more than their victims were ever allowed.

As a young child I sat down with my father who told me of the day after a concentration camp was found. What I remember the most was the horrific expression on his face as he told me what he saw. That day was burned in his mind and this story he recalled to me will always be remembered

This video would have been really useful when I got posed the "victor's trial" question as an exam essay at high school

In addition to the Nuremberg trials there were Military Tribunals for specific incidents where the laws of war were violated. For example, the Military Tribunal at Dachau run by the U.S. Army convicted 74 members of the SS for various crimes for the Malmedy Massacre. 46 were sentenced to death.

I moved to Germany for work some years ago, last winter break, my boss insisted to take me to Nuremberg, especially the Palace of Justice. He said to me: This is our history, we must never forget, everyone must know.

Man, Franz von Papen is a blast from the past

Couple of notes:
- the trial took place in the Justice Palace also because it was basically the only building in the city that was both big enough and undamaged
- I believe that the executioner based the ropes on the prisoners' weight before the trial. But during the imprisonment they were fed a healthy diet meaning the lost a lot of weight and the executioner simply didn't count with it

Excellent work Sparty and Sebastian.

An interesting and thought-provoking episode, as always. In the unlikely event that you chaps read this:
Sparty: After years working on the Crimes Against Humanity series, I can only imagine how it feels to now come to the end of that road, and document the justice served to the perpetrators. Watching it made for one hell of a ride, although rarely was it an easy watch. I can only imagine how tough it was to research, write and produce the series. You did a fantastic job, and I hope this episode will offer you a measure of closure.
Sebastian: We haven't seen much of you in front of the cameras, but your presentation style here was polished, confident and professional. Nicely done.
