Melk Abbey might be the best day trip from Vienna that most visitors never take. Just over an hour by train, this stunning Baroque abbey sits high above the Danube and has been home to Benedictine monks for over 900 years.

We caught a morning train from Vienna, made an unexpected stop in the often-overlooked city of St. Pölten for coffee, and then spent the afternoon exploring Melk Abbey on a full guided tour. Instead of just rushing to the abbey and back, we wanted to show you how to turn this into a proper full day out, the kind of day trip we love most.
