I am just getting into primitive archery.
As an archer, I am NOT.  However, I am a Surgical Technician,  and Army Combat Medic (ret.), and as such, know a bit about body mechanics. You're quite correct concerning shoulders.
The way the shoulder works, it becomes quite instable, and easily injured when the elbow gets above the level of your shoulder.
I am hoping to strengthen my shoulders with archery.

Although if I may add to the confusion. There are battlefield technics, where you draw from the lower ready position. But this is rarely taught anyway, so never mind ;)

FYI, The Japanese traditional technique is unique because of the design of the yumi bow itself. That's also why the anchor is way past the ear.
Japanese High draw was invented so they also could draw bow on a horse, without movement restriction caused by the design of the Yumi.
For the reason of Yumi design, you should look for it by yourself for deeper understanding.
