I started at the dojo on Olympic Blvd in 1963; at that time, Senseis Oshima and Nishiyama were still teaching jointly at the CKA dojo.  I believe their breakup happened shortly thereafter, because I found out that Nishiyama Sensei had formed the All-America Karate Federation and many of the faces I had become accustomed to seeing at the central dojo were no longer there.  I remained a student of Nishiyama Sensei through the early 70s.  At that time I moved to Alaska, and had to temporarily curtail my practice due to knee trouble.  I was grateful to have had the opportunity to train with so many gifted karateka.

What an amazing man. I remember reading articles in Black Belt Magazines about him in the 70's.

this is Ohshima who asked Funakoshi family the permission to translate the book in English, not the Funkakoshi family who asked him to translate. Ohshima needed a book for his students. Himself said that in an interview.

Many thanks for the  video, and all the best for  Master Oshima and his followers. Let me only to agree , hard training is not the only but sure way of  building true mental strength and physical endurance. . Paul.

Thank you - it was very enlightening to hear the story of one of Funakoshi's most influential karate students.  You can tell that he disagreed with the changes made to Shotokan and there seemed to be a distrust and a rift with other karate associations and masters which was ultimately warranted.  The more I learn about karate the more it seems to me all the masters wanted to be the chiefs of their own fiefdom.  There were very few and far between who were fine just teaching at a dojo and not having their own karate federation or style.
