I fucking KNEW there was an input delay on the dodge and this is the first place i’ve seen confirming it

7:55 The humble Boosted Greatsword TCS

Thank you very much for covering this, ig is my fav weapon in rise but somehow when playing in wild is kinda awkward so thats the reason

You can spin the camera during the Focus Strike animation, when you jab the glaive into the wound. The hunter always leaps "backwards" relative to the direction you're aiming in the focus mode during the animation. Without any input, this will obviously put you away from the monster. But turning your camera allows you to change the direction and stay close to the monster

They really perfected Insect Glaive in Rise Sunbreak as the aerial weapon
And then said "Screw it we're going back to World, back to being more effective as a ground weapon and make everything we add in Wilds slightly wonky"

Honestly, Insect Glaive feels like it changes the most across games, which is both a blessing and a curse. World Insect Glaive used its relative attack speed and moderate ground damage to chip away at the monster over time. Iceborne's Descending Thrust made it a little more committal and gave it some better burst damage (as well as improving its relationship with the Kinsect). Rise went all in on the gimmicks, with the best-feeling aerial Glaive thus far, which only improved in Sunbreak (only complaint is the lack of aerial Swap Scroll). Wilds turned it into a burst damage weapon, with fluid Kinsect/light attack synergy for utility.

I like all 3, but Wilds' doesn't seem quite as special in the way World/Iceborne's and Rise/Sunbreak's do. It feels too rooted in-place for what it is. Descending Thrust doesn't have that satisfying flip into the dive that seems to preserve momentum, and it's far less mobile than Rise due to the lack of Wirebugs. I hope the Boost Bracer gives it something crazy to keep in pace (both metaphorically and literally).

Great video, this shows that capcom messed around with IG too much

IG player here,

You should be using Culldrones for monsters with severable tails

Recover Powder is extremely valuable for offsetting the chip damage you take with heals that keep you in the monster’s face

Harvest Extract isn’t as important if you use the charge

Aerial combos are useful for aggroing big monsters with wings on their backs like Zoh Shia and Gogmazios — you can keep them away from your allies just by staying in its face

Focus Mode is useful for using your Kinsect from a distance to do damage — it will spin around in the air, so I use it when a monster is doing charged area damage so you’re not just standing there waiting

you didn't mention the backward vault evasion, i always like to do that when AT Arkveld unleash his ultimate combo and basically just hug it so that the next 2 combo can't touch me , allows me to squeeze in a spiral rising slash followed up with the weakpoint focus strike to regain extract

Hey man! Thanks a lot for all these videos <3

great video! after watching this I realise I may have been neglecting my  Gullshad Kinsect. It seems to be the best middle ground for Speed and Harvest Extract

during the focus strike if u turn ur camera away from the monster it makes u jump back at the monster so there is less of a gap to close

What a great explanation!
For the offset part, as an IG main from the start, I encounter a lot of issues you've just covered: timing is extremely difficult (I think Capcom has improved it, but still relatively short compared to other weapons), super short hyper armor, and the longest after-animation.
But there are some details about strong descending slash: 1. the player is still moving during the combo, and 2. this offset is "the only" offset that can parry all directions (of course, you need your glaive "swing" to that position. If your glaive is still forward but the attack is already at your back, it won't work).
So these two things, if mastering them, you'll get what I call "backward parry/offset", or even sideway parry. What you need to do is turn your back on the monster, cancel Focus Mode (otherwise you’ll end up facing the monster again), and anticipate that the monster’s attack hitbox will be exactly where the Strong Descending Slash swings past behind you (this means you need to activate Strong Descending Slash earlier than usual). You can re-enable Focus Mode after the offset if needed to move differently with the follow-up of Strong Descending Slash. This way, you can offset the attack and also walk around from them, which is a solution for me while encountering some attacks that have lingering hitboxes (eg. AT Rey Dau) or multiple hitboxes (eg. AT Arkveld's chain slide).
Welp, is this useful? Absolutely not. It is mostly a show-off; simply evade or reposition is usually much safer and more efficient than this, but it's just a technique that shows someone mastering the offset mechanic of IG.

3:56 There are 2 important properties of the Kinsect drill attack that you didn't cover:

First, you can begin charging during the recovery animation of any of your glaive attacks, allowing you to perform one or two attacks of the Sidestep combo to grab your first extract and then combo the drill attack at the end to grab the other two. With the Fast Charge boost, the drill attack fully charges right as you recover into a neutral walk after the first attack of the Sidestep combo or faster than you can recover into a neutral walk after the second attack of the Sidestep combo (applies to all directions).

Second, during the drill attack, the Kinsect will prioritize extracts that you don't already have if it picks up more extracts than it can carry. For example, if you have no extracts and use an attack in Focus Mode to grab orange from Arkveld's chains and then use a drill attack that hits Arkveld's chains (orange), head (red), torso (orange), and hind legs (white) in that order, a Whispervesp, which can only carry 2 extracts, will always return with red and white despite picking up orange first.

The second property means the Harvest Extract boost doesn't make quite as big of a difference as you might expect, especially when considering the speed difference between Kinsects. If you're having trouble collecting extracts with the Arkmaiden because the monster moves out of the way too quickly, you may want to give the Whispervesp a try.

amazing! ty for the info! Your videos are so good for getting people to try weapons! The gap closer choices are new to me and I somehow didn't know how to trigger a strong desceding slash from the air XD I always press b and get lucky if i held it for a bit! The insect glaive's damage output is insane; especially, in groups. Probably why its defense is so lacking lol. I feel like it's almost entirely positioning and rolling XD. After watching your vids I practiced like crazy with C.B and S.A but this weapon always jumps out at me when I play group with it's damage. Thanks for the great info on how to properly use and flow with the weapon!

Finally, It's time for my boy, as a person with 1700 IG hunts in world and 350 in wilds, I have nothing more to add, you did a fantastic job explaining it. The most anoying part about wilds IG is as you said the input delay on the roll, dont unerasteame it guys it will mess you up. I play 8 weapons in wilds and evey time I'm coming back to my main I have to subconsciously relearn the doge timings every time, even with all my experience, it is so annoying!! So if you plan on using multiple weapons you should definitely be heavily aware of that.. and maybe leave IG on the sideline if you not in love with it as I'm

good guide as usual. i been waiting for this wep but i have become proficient already ahha,

I'm trying it out right now. I am lance main and decided to try.

No one told me about the lvl 1 earplug 😩

I miss the hitstop on the insect (regular L2+triangle) in the world it was good, I knew exactly when the insect hit the monster, and wall pin climb is no longer possible.
